Artwork Title: Release
Oil on canvas, 36x40 inches, 2008 (see side image)
Juror Statement:
"The playfulness and drama of this piece combine with symbolism and quite beautiful patterns and colors to create a very successful whole. The viewer is immediately engaged on an aesthetic level, and yet the painting is layered and nuanced enough to keep the eye searching and the mind wondering. Beneath the surface, conveyed through the figures' postures and expressions, are emotions, stories, and relationships. This painting is a complete and connective work." Juror - Lidia Simeonova
Artist Statement:
"Traveling and moving a great deal throughout my life, I attempt to slow things down, invent still memories and imagine farfetched alternatives to the real. Embracing everyday stresses, anxieties and wonder, I create narrative imagery that embraces the use of self portraiture. By nature, I am an actress but am too apprehensive to perform on stage. Instead, the studio becomes my theater where I actively draw and paint from direct observation. Aided by wigs and the occasional costume, I alter my appearance while laboring to best portray a desired emotion and endure any necessary discomforts to fully express it. Motivated by daydreams and guided by passions that play a daily tug of war, I visually integrate reality with a spectacle of childhood fantasy, creating a transition between what was then and what exists now." - Amy Freeman
