Hudson, New York - This May Limner Gallery presents Art Biologic. The group exhibition, which runs from May 2-24, examines the varied interpretations of the biological world. The twenty artists in the exhibition explore all realms of the biologic, from the living to the dead, the real to the imagined.

On the imaginary end of the spectrum Thomas Andrew's graphite drawing, Something Other, shows us a strange creature, a weird octopus like alien vacuum cleaner with giant eyeballs. In Robert Horning's oil painting, Beetle Breakfast, two beetles sit at table in a pleasant country setting eating breakfast. Contrasting this are some realist works, like Katherine Cumming's photograph, Seal, (pictured above) and Janine Kilty's, beautifully rendered Oil on Linen of a Grey Parrot. Also in the show are some very strange works that are reminiscent of biology experiments. Bethany Krull's installation, Contained, with rows of larva suspended in ball jars, appears to be a cross between a lab and a larva jelly factory. Some works have a particularly morbid bent, such as Karen Bondarchuk's, Corvus Deflatus, a six foot long sculpture of a dead crow made of a roadside tire rubber and Madison Mastri's digital photograph, You Are What You Eat, depicting a formaldehyde preserved piglet superimposed over a ring of thick sausage.

In all the artists in Art Biologic pass their brush widely through the spectrum of biology, making this a very interesting exhibition that can't be passed through quickly. The show runs the gamut of styles and media and the artists approach to the theme are at times in stark contrast--some works can only be described as odd and out of place--but as a whole the show holds up well. I could have done without Katherine Patterson's, Catsnake, it is a well executed piece, but something about a hissing cat head on a furry snake body just gives me the creeps.
