More than 800 images were submitted to the Artful Photography National Juried Exhibition, currently showing in the Circle Gallery at the Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis, MD.
Of the 53 photographs selected for the show, two are by Ross. He not only took top honors for “Charlotte Woods,” but also had “Snow Stream,” a light-painted image of a creek running between snowy banks, accepted for the exhibit.
Ross’s “painting with light” technique involves photographing at night, applying his light source over the subject and choosing what to highlight and what to obscure. The effect is intriguing, as the real and actual landscape is bathed in the artificiality of Ross's light.
'I think of it more as ‘sculpting with light," the artist says. "My goal is to shape the scene in a way that takes it beyond the limits of our everyday vision."
Ross’s images can be seen at www.haroldrossfineart.com.
The juror for the exhibit was Catriona Fraser, owner of the Fraser Gallery in Bethesda, MD.
The Maryland Federation of Art is a winner, too – it was voted "The Capital's Reader's Choice 2010 Best Art Gallery in Annapolis."
The reception for the artists will be Sunday, May 30, from 3-6 p.m. The exhibit runs through June 13.
