In these new sketches and paintings from life by Mary Salstrom, the artist’s perception of a place connects with her inner vision. A direct fresh response to seeing landscape in the open air combines with many inspirations in the imagination of paintings and other images, of music, and of fragments of poetry. Color interacting with light in these paintings expresses through abstract forms as shapes or marks a freeing or enhancing of the sense of motion of clouds or the movement of water, or of light sparkling on leaves. Figures and architecture establish spatial elements of scale and geometry while also adding the warmth of human presence.
Mary Salstrom who lives in new York City, is a native of the Rock River Valley and Oregon, Illinois where she returns to paint landscapes of the prairie, river and forest from life each summer. She exhibits her works in solo and group exhibitions. Recent shows include: "Timeless the Art of Drawing" at the Morris Museum, New Jersey and “Homage to Fairfield Porter (1907-1975): A Centennial Celebration” at the North Shore Art League, Winnetka, Illinois, curated by Mark Krisco. Her work is in several public collections including "The Scott Memorial Study Collection," Bryn Mawyr College, Pennsylvania.; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York; The Oregon Public Library and Art Gallery Collection, Illinois; and The Rockford Art Museum, Illinois; She first studied psychology and art at Kent State, Ohio; then at Pratt Institute, BFA; Brooklyn College, MFA; the Art Students’ League, New York City, and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine.
