Laguna Beach, CA - Sue Greenwood Fine Art Gallery is pleased to announce the third solo exhibition by West Coast artist Sherry Karver. Her current series of photo-based work originates from photographs she has taken on the streets of New York City, Seattle, San Francisco and at Grand Central Station.  In her work she is expanding and shifting the parameters of traditional photography by combining it with digital technology, oil painting, and text, blending the distinctions between these areas to create a new format. She prints her work in black and white, building up the color with many thin layers of oil glazes to create one–of-a-kind photo-based oil paintings.

Karver also adds text over some of the figures in her photos in an attempt to personalize or individualize them, and show that each one of us has our own unique story.  These brief biographies about the people are solely from her imagination, and often reveal some intimate and quite humorous details. By using text in her work, the viewer can focus on “experiencing” the artwork, and become a part of the process in reading it, rather than simply looking at a picture from a distance.

“I was born and raised in Chicago, and now live in Oakland, California”, Karver explains, “so my work is informed by city life and the multitude of issues we encounter living in today’s fast-paced society. My work deals with loneliness and alienation, the concept of personal identity and the loss of it, being collectively alone, and how we, as individuals can stand out from the crowd”.

Her work has been widely exhibited nationally, in both museum and gallery shows, is included in over 150 private and corporate collections around the country, and has been on over a dozen book and magazine covers. She was included in 100 Artists of the West Coast by Douglas Bullis, has appeared twice in New American Painting, and has received numerous critically acclaimed reviews for her exhibitions. Most recently Karver’s work was added to the permanent collections of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art in Santa Cruz, California, and the Crocker Museum of Art in Sacramento, California.
