11th Annual Downtown Colorado Springs Art on the Street

National Deadline: February 25, 2009 - 11th Annual Downtown Colorado Springs Art on the Street, an outdoor art competition and year-long exhibition.

Art on the Streets (AOTS) is proudly presented by U.S. Bank, Nor’wood Development Group, and G.E. Johnson in concert with Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs and its affiliate, Community Ventures, Inc. In its eleventh year, AOTS is a yearlong venue to showcase the works of new as well as celebrated artists from across the nation while enlivening the Downtown Colorado Springs cityscape and urban experience.

Downtown Colorado Springs is committed to broadening its artistic and cultural offerings to provide a diverse and exciting physical environment, enhance the quality of life, encourage dialogue and learning, and influence economic growth.

A wide range of artistic expression, varied talent and cultural context are primary AOTS objectives. While sculpture tends to dominate the entry pool, other types of public art suitable for outdoor display are highly encouraged. Large-scale, outside-the-box, can’t-be-missed pieces are desirable. The only common denominator among selected works is the durability, safety and quality of the art.

Total number of selected pieces depends on the scope and quality of entries; however, typically the exhibit ranges between 10 and 15 pieces. Juror Jan Schall will announce all of the selections and personally introduce the award winners at the June 26, 2009 opening reception. The exhibit will run through May of 2010.

A color brochure of the AOTS exhibit ­including photos of the artwork, artists’ biographies and a walking tour map ­ will be produced and released through the Downtown Partnership, Community Ventures, Inc., Convention & Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Pikes Peak Library District and numerous downtown businesses.

Second Prize $10,000
Third Prize $5,000

Plus $500 honoraria to each artist for installation assistance and one night complimentary lodging per artist for attendance at opening reception.

Jan Schall, Ph.D.
Sanders Sosland Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO Jan Schall, Sanders Sosland Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in art history from Washington University in St. Louis. In 2000, Schall organized the National Endowment for the Arts Millennium Projects exhibition Tempus Fugit: Time Flies and produced both its accompanying catalogue and award-winning website. More recently, she curated Kiki Smith: Constellation and co-curated Sparks! The William T. Kemper Collecting Initiative and the five-part New Media Projects exhibition. Schall oversaw the renovation and reinstallation of the Museum’s Kansas City Sculpture Park and developed and implemented both the program and installation of the modern and contemporary collection in the expanded Museum. Schall’s research has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Selected Artwork:
Selected artwork will be exhibited throughout the 40-square-block downtown district, with the majority of pieces clustered in the busiest 10- to15-block core. The yearlong, changing exhibit of 12 to 15 works of art throughout downtown Colorado Springs was the front player in an evolving revitalization of the community’s arts scene ­ including formation of a first-ever cultural office (COPPeR), a major expansion of the city’s John Gaw Meem-designed Fine Arts Center, and new construction of Colorado College’s copper-lidded, mesmerizingly asymmetrical 70,000 square-foot Cornerstone Arts Center, designed by Antoine Predock, FAIA. AOTS has also influenced purchase and permanent installation of many of the nearly 50 works of public art in downtown Colorado Springs ­ everything from life-size portrayals of city founders to giant metal sunflowers in arterial medians and contemporary, interactive, non-representational works tucked into the urban landscape. More than 150 works of art have adorned downtown Colorado Springs since AOTS began in 1999.

Entry Submissions:
Artists may enter two works, with a suggested minimum dimension of 3 feet, vertical or horizontal, and scaled to outdoor spaces. Artists should consider that their work will be exhibited outdoors and accessible to the public for a period of approximately 11 months.

Proposals using alternative materials, and/or creative use of space is encouraged. Please call to discuss if you have questions.

Submission materials should be presented in one packet (no proposals sent via email) in a Word or .pdf document with JPEG images burned to a CD or DVD, and must include:
  • Full contact information: Name, address, phone and email.
  • Narrative description of the artwork.
  • A current, professional resume and two-paragraph maximum artist’s statement incorporating comment about submitted proposal.
  • Digital images only, up to three views per piece, in JPEG format. In naming digital files, please include artist surname, art title and image number followed by the “.jpg” extension. When selecting photos for submission, consider at least one image that is of publication-quality to be used for publicity purposes.
  • I mage list including artist name, image number, title, media, dimensions (in feet, h x w x d), date, value of the work and any applicable notes.
  • Plan for installation (see details below)
  • Self-addressed-stamped-envelope (SASE) if return of materials to non-selected artists is desired.
  • Non-refundable entry fee of $25, payable by check, to Community Ventures, Inc. Visa or MasterCard payments will also be accepted although we ask that you call with CC information (phone 719.886.0088).

Entries must be received by 5:00 p.m., MST, on February 25, 2009.

Terms of Installation:
  • Each selected artist bears responsibility for the installation of his/her work. Artists must deliver (or ship) their work and assist in its installation. A $500 honorarium to offset expenses will be awarded to each artist.
  • All selected artists must provide a plan for the installation of their artwork, to include any engineering specifications, unique considerations for non-metal media, placement suggestions and other significant factors affecting exhibition for an extended period of time. AOTS, its sponsors and the City of Colorado Springs shall not be liable for any loss incurred due to a faulty connection between the artwork and the surface it is attached to. Please call 719-886-0088 with any questions BEFORE submitting your entry and installation plan.
  • Installation will occur from mid-May – mid-June, in the days prior to the Opening Reception on June 26, 2009, with the hope that out-of-state selected artists can both install and attend the opening reception during one trip. Out of town artists who wish to attend the opening reception will be offered one night’s complementary lodging at a designated locale.
The Fine Print:
  • Incomplete or late entries will not be accepted. All entrants will be notified of the results of the selection process within a timely manner. Please do not call to inquire about status.
  • Any selected work that upon delivery, has been altered significantly (from entry submittal) as to dimensions, scale or color without prior approval from Community Ventures, will not be accepted into the show.
  • Submission materials of the selected artists will become part of the exhibition’s permanent record and will not be returned.
  • AOTS provides insurance, publicity and assistance in the sale of pieces. Artists agree to a 25 percent commission payable to Community Ventures, Inc.
  • Submission of entry constitutes agreement by artists to the conditions set forth. A lease agreement for exhibition artwork will be executed soon after selection notification has been made.
