Purpose:
The
non profit foundation, ArtInPlace, under the sponsorship of City
Council, has established sites around the City of Charlottesville to
make art accessible to the general public. The outdoor sculptures
selected for exhibition should provide the community with a wide range
of artistic styles, themes and media which enhance our concepts of
space and place and enliven our sense that art has the power to move us.
Process:
Several
locations around the City have been selected for public sculpture.
Charlottesville is visited by 500,000 tourists each year. All locations
are in areas of high vehicular traffic. Although we are looking
primarily for large works, smaller pieces need not be ruled out. Each
installation will be in place for 11 months.
This program of temporary exhibitions is designed to provide interesting art to drivers in their travels about the City. Located in various neighborhoods along busy streets and supported by background information on the World Wide Web, the works are meant to enliven the urban experience. The program is funded by an initial grant from the City of Charlottesville and maintained by commissions or by donations to defray the cost of installing sculpture on other public sites.
Each selected work will be provided with signs that direct the viewer to this website. Based on electronic material submitted, each artist receives appropriate descriptions of themselves and their work, the availability of other work for sale, and a link to his/her own website. Artists are responsible for providing this description and images of work in electronic format. In addition, there will be links to the City's webpage. Every effort will be made to publicize the work with the local media.
Entry Requirements:
The
invitation is open to artists working independently or in a
collaborative group. Interested sculptors are encouraged to submit:
- a professional resume
- the registration form
- slides or photos of available work.
- Footing requirements and method of installation for each work.
Slides or photos must be clearly labeled with ARTIST'S NAME, TITLE OF WORK, MEDIUM and DIMENSIONS. Additional materials, such as brochures and artist's statements are encouraged. If the sculptor provides a self-addressed, stamped envelope, submitted materials will be returned.
Each artist selected will receive a $1500 honorarium.
Selection Process:
After
juried review of the submitted materials, six to ten artists will be
invited to participate. Contracts will be executed with the artists and
arrangements made for the delivery and installation of the works. All
artists are required to carry general liability insurance and, if they
deem it necessary, property insurance.
Once the art is installed there will be a second jury process to award the $1,000 Great Eastern Management Company Best In Show Award.
Schedule:

At
the discretion of the jury and pending final approval by the City, ten
locations will be selected from a list of 20 potential sites. The jury
will strive to provide the most suitable location available for the
selected sculptures. After the sites have been assigned, the artist may
coordinate with the Construction Chair on the exact placement of the
artwork within the site.
