Soho Photo Gallery 15th National Juried Competition

National Deadline: May 1, 2010 - Soho Photo Gallery of New York City is pleased to announce its 15th National Juried Competition. The competition is open to all U.S. residents, age 18 and older, excluding current members of Soho Photo Gallery.

All photo-based works are eligible, with no limitation as to subject matter or technique. The show will run from July 6 through August 7 in our gallery in the Tribeca section of New York City.

Approximately 35 photographs will be chosen by Jennifer Blessing, Curator of Photography at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. First, second and third place prizes will be provided by Soho Photo Gallery, K&M Camera and Fastback Creative Books. At least two honorable mentions will be given at the discretion of the juror.

About the Juror
Jennifer Blessing is Curator of Photography at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. She recently organized Catherine Opie: American Photographer, which opened in September 2008. Prior to this project, she curated two exhibitions for the Deutsche Guggenheim: True North (2008) and Jeff Wall: Exposure (2007-08). In addition to organizing photobased exhibitions, she is responsible for developing the museum's photography collection. Her current is exhibition Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance, which will appear at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, beginning March 2010.

Previous jurors were Susan Kismaric, Mia Fineman, Charles H. Traub, Gerard Vezzuso, Richard B. Woodward, Lyle Rexer, Willis Hartshorn, Melissa Harris, Adam Weinberg, Barbara Millstein, Sarah Morthland and Anne Ellegood.

Submissions
Download the entry form. Complete the form electronically and print it.

Submission is by CD only. Images must be saved as jpeg files. No side of the image (horizontal or vertical) can exceed 1500 pixels. Each file must be labeled with your last and first names, the number of the photograph (corresponding to the number on the submission form) and the title of the photograph. Example: DoeJane,3,MalibuSunset

In addition, label your CD with your name, phone number and email address.

Do not send artist statements, resumes, postcards or other promotional items with your entry. Do not mail your entry with a return signature required. Your CD will be returned only if you include a self-addressed stamped envelope large enough to hold the disk. CDs that are not returned will be destroyed.

Entry Fee & Commission
The entry fee is $40 for up to five photographs. Additional images may be submitted for $5 each. Make checks payable to Soho Photo Gallery. Soho Photo requests 20% of all sales made while the work is on display.

The deadline for receipt of entries is May 1, 2010. The photographers chosen by the judge will be notified by email before May 31. The juror’s selections will also be posted on the Soho Photo web site by that date.

All entrants who submitted a SASE for their CDs will be notified of the juror’s decision with the return of their CDs.

Winning photographs must be framed and wired for hanging. Maximum height or width (including frame) of exhibited work cannot exceed 48 inches. Although Soho Photo Gallery will make every reasonable effort to protect your work while it is in our possession, we are not legally responsible for it. Therefore, consider insuring your work while it is in our possession.

Soho Photo Gallery is the oldest artist-run photography gallery in New York City, showcasing a broad spectrum of imagery by emerging and veteran photographers. It was established in 1971 by a group of photojournalists and avant-garde photographers who were seeking an alternative gallery space in which to exhibit work.
