Competitions Materials: Hard + Soft International

Greater Denton Arts CouncilDenton, Texas, United States

Opportunity Description

International Deadline: September 30, 2016 – The Greater Denton Arts Council proudly presents the 30th annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough.

The exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. In this anniversary year, we are thrilled to be partnering with the National Endowment for the Arts to expand this national exhibition to now include international artists. Approximately 70 works will be selected by an esteemed juror for exhibition at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center in Denton, Texas.

Works produced in any of the craft media: clay, fiber, glass, metal, paper, wood, or any combination of craft media, are acceptable. Entries must be the complete work of the submitting artist. Kits or commercially designed works will not be accepted. All work must have been completed within the past two years (2014-2016) and not previously exhibited at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.

2017 JUROR
JoAnn Edwards, Executive Director, has overseen the Museum of Craft and Design’s vision and growth since its founding in downtown San Francisco in 2003 to its relocation and acclaimed 2013 grand reopening in San Francisco’s historic Dogpatch district.

Edwards is a staunch advocate for artists, as well as an expert in the contemporary craft movement and was recently invited to be an international juror for the Dutch Design Awards at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, Netherlands. She frequently acts as a panelist at national conferences relating to contemporary studio furniture, as well as a juror/critic for such institutions as the American Craft Council, California College of the Arts, International Contemporary Furniture Fair, Palo Alto Art Center Foundation, Arts Council Santa Cruz and ENGAGE Art Fair. Formerly, Edwards served as a trustee on the Board of Directors for the Furniture Society and Chair of Exhibitions.

Beyond her role in the arts, culture, and design sectors, Edwards has held roles as the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors for the Support Network for Battered Women of Santa Clara County from 1998–2002. In 2001, Edwards received the Unsung Hero Award from the Victim Support Network of Santa Clara County.

Prior to founding the Museum of Craft and Design, Edwards co-owned contemporary art galleries in the San Francisco Bay Area for twenty six years.

The Greater Denton Arts Council will provide Juror Awards in the amounts of $1,000, $750, $500 and $250. Winners will be determined by the juror and will be announced at the opening reception of the exhibition on February 3, 2016.

Each artist is limited to three (3) entries. There is a $40 (USD) non-refundable fee, for up to three (3) entries. Payments must be submitted online at the time of application.
