Competitions Art in an Age of Anxiety

U.S. National Deadline: July 21, 2018 – The Arts Guild of Sonoma invites artists to participate in our annual juried exhibition, Art in an Age of Anxiety.
Although first coined by WH Auden in 1948 to describe the fear, disillusionment, confusion, and dismay that Europeans endured, we know full well that the “Age of Anxiety” is not contained in the past. We are highly conscious of the perils of our era, from the rise of fascism, environmental concerns, threats to privacy, terrorism, drugs, and assaults on our democracy. Artists help to chronicle, illuminate, and cope with this anxiety.
Open to all artists nationally (over 18 years) in the mediums of Sculpture, Printing, Painting, Photography, Ceramics, Assemblage, Collage, Mixed Media, Fiber Art, and Book Art. This exhibition does not accept jewelry, video, film, performance art, installation or artwork requiring a power source. All work must be original – no reproductions. No works over 50 pounds. 2D work: may not exceed 40” horizontally and 60” vertically, must be wired (no sawtooth hangers), and unframed canvases must have painted edges. 3D work: may not exceed 16” width/length and 48” height, and must include a stable base or hanging hardware, if applicable. The gallery will furnish pedestals as needed.
JUROR: Chester Arnold
Chester Arnold is a teacher and a nationally exhibited painter whose works explore the contemporary landscape.
His work is represented in the public collections of many institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Huntington Library, Pasadena, the Nevada Museum of Art, and the San Jose Museum of Art. He has been critically reviewed in Artforum, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Arnold lives in Sonoma, California, and has been represented by Catharine Clark Gallery since 2003.
$500 for Best of Show, and $100 each for up to three honorable mention awards.
$40 for up to three entries. $5 discount for AGS members. Entry fees are non-refundable.
Work will be selected from online submissions. It is the artist’s responsibility to review and abide by the rules and procedures for submission, jpeg sizes and payment as outlined in the entry form.
DELIVERY and PICK UP of ACCEPTED WORK
Detailed information will be supplied to artists with accepted works on Aug. 4.
All works must be for sale. Artists receive 60% of the sales price of the work. Sales occurring up to 30 days after the closing date of the exhibition are subject to a 40% donation to AGS.
EXHIBITION, LIABILITY and IMAGE USE
No substitutes will be accepted for selected works. Work must be on view for the duration of the exhibition. AGS and its representatives assume no liability for damage or loss. Insurance for damage or loss is the sole responsibility of the artist. Artist agrees that selected works may be used by the Arts Guild of Sonoma to advertise and promote this exhibition.
Entry into this exhibition constitutes an agreement to comply with all rules and conditions set forth above.
