Opportunity Description

International Deadline: May 20, 2018 – Highly regarded ARC Gallery announces a call for artists worldwide, belonging to any gender, to enter our upcoming exhibition, ‘Pride and Prejudice: Gender Realities in the 21st Century’ The exhibition will be on display June 20, 2018 thru July 14, 2018, both at our gallery and online.

GENDER—perhaps the most essential aspect of one’s person— has transcended the binary ideas of the past, evolving into complex conceptions about identity and sexuality. While contemporary gender expression has created space for empowerment and freedoms for many, it remains confusing for some, wrong-headed for others, and a topic that is continually fascinating to the media. Many welcome this attention and the progress it bodes; but it has also resulted in pain, harassment, and discrimination for others.

ARC, established as a woman-run gallery 45 years ago, continues to embrace and honor the various struggles associated with belonging to a particular gender. Because of this mission, the gallery is calling for entries to a juried exhibition entitled “Pride and Prejudice”.

ELIGIBILITY
We are looking for artists’ work that reacts to the pride inherent in belonging to any gender (or not), as well as work that explores the pain, struggle or prejudice that can result from embracing one’s identity. We invite artists of all genders to apply to this exhibition, documenting their own unique experiences in creative dialogue. An array of gender and gender expressions are welcome.

Open to original works created within the last three years. All mediums and materials will be considered in addition to video and performance based arts. No projections or media installations will be accepted for this show due to space limitations. Open to all artists, nationwide and international.

JUROR
Work for this exhibition will be juried by Oli Rodriguez, an interdisciplinary artist who teaches photography at the School of the Art Institute… see more

About:
ARC Gallery and Educational Foundation is a non-profit, woman-run cooperative gallery dedicated to providing alternative space exhibition opportunities for innovative artists outside the commercial gallery system. Since 1973 ARC has given exposure and support to artists, providing an atmosphere for the continued development of artistic potential and experimentation.

ARC is run entirely by its women artist members; as a non-profit exhibition space. ARC receives some support from outside funding sources but not enough to cover our operating expenses. Thus, to provide the space and services we offer to exhibiting artists, we defray our expenses by charging exhibition fees. Each of the rental spaces in the gallery actually costs twice as much as we charge the artists.
