International Deadline: September 29, 2017 – The Greater Denton Arts Council proudly presents the 31st Annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. The exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. We are now able to expand this exhibition internationally thanks to the support of the National Endowment for the Arts. Approximately 70 works will be selected by an esteemed juror for exhibition at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center in Denton, Texas.
Perry A. Price is Executive Director of Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in Houston, Texas.
The Greater Denton Arts Council will provide Juror Awards in the amounts of $1,000, $750, $500 and $250. Winners will be determined by the juror and will be announced at the opening reception of the exhibition on February 2, 2018.

The Arts Council provides foundational support for Denton’s artists and community arts organizations and collaborates frequently with area universities, the Denton Independent School District, and the City of Denton. The Arts Council presents a full schedule of programs and exhibitions in its flagship facility in historic downtown Denton, the Patterson-Appleton Center Arts Center.
The Patterson-Appleton Arts Center is truly the arts engine of Denton. Built in 1929 and located between Denton’s Downtown Square and emerging innovation district, this historic building was originally the city’s steam power plant. Renovated in the 1980s, the Arts Center now offers two large galleries, art studio, dance rehearsal hall and sculpture garden. The centerpiece of the venue is Festival Hall, a 5000 square foot event and exhibition space with soaring ceilings and original industrial hardware.
