Opportunity Description

International Deadline: December 15, 2017 – McColl Center for Art + Innovation is a nationally acclaimed artist residency and contemporary art space in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its mission is to empower artists, advance communities, and contribute positive impacts to its broad public audience by introducing a range of current artistic practices. Located in the former Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Uptown Charlotte, McColl Center houses nine individual artist studios, more than 5,000 square feet of exhibition space, and multiple common-use spaces, including a studio for large-scale sculpture fabrication. We invite artists to take risks in their processes and explore their ideas within the context of Charlotte. We welcome the visiting public to connect with contemporary art and artists through exhibitions and public programs.

Carolinas HealthCare System Artist-in-Residence Program
Residency Session: January 14–April 15, 2019

Since 1999, McColl Center has partnered annually with Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS), one of the leading healthcare organizations in the Southeast, to support one artist-in-residence in a medical setting, in order to explore how the arts can extend or enhance healthcare and healing. CHS has more than 900 care locations, including: academic medical centers, hospitals, freestanding emergency departments, healthcare pavilions, physician practices, outpatient surgical centers, laboratories, rehabilitation centers, home-health agencies, nursing homes, hospice and palliative-care centers, pharmacies, and imaging centers. CHS artists-in-residence have worked in various areas of the healthcare system, facilitating opportunities for self-reflection and creative expression for patients and staff. Examples of past projects include: A portraiture project, addressing the changing identities of ten women experiencing breast cancer and chemotherapy and confronting issues about beauty, femininity, and motherhood; artist-led drawing and guided-meditation workshops at Levine Cancer Institute; and a series of 3D works created in collaboration with medical staff to identify, select, and reimagine patients’ brain scans.

McColl Center seeks project proposals from regional, national, and international artists for the Spring 2019 season. Artists may work in architecture, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, design, fiction and nonfiction writing, music, theatre, social practice, urban agriculture, or interdisciplinary practices. We look for artists who are engaged in research and investigation and who are interested in the healthcare system as both site and subject for their work. Successful proposals will clearly state how the artist’s project will advance the theme of healthcare and healing and actively engage CHS patients and/or staff.
