Opportunity Description

International Deadline: January 15, 2018 – The Fiber Artist Fellowship seeks to provide early-career fiber artists the opportunity to learn new techniques and skills while engaging with a vibrant community of artists from all over the world. Each fellow is awarded two weeks of workshops, housing, and meals (lunch and dinner) during Quilting by the Lake (July 15-27, 2018) in Syracuse, NY. While many of the workshops focus on quilting and surface design- fiber artists of all media are welcome to apply.

Quilting by the Lake (QBL) is an internationally recognized event attracting over 200 participants from around the country and overseas. From the beginning, QBL recruited some of the most innovative and legendary artists to teach and that tradition continues today. Classes are offered in design, techniques, and surface design. In addition to classes, the sessions includes artist lectures, a quilt show, and many other activities.

WORKSHOPS
Fellows have their choice of 15 signature workshops, including independent study. Quilting by the Lake has two week long sessions that offers 2-day, 3-day, and 5 day workshops. Fellows are welcome to combine workshops and independent study to suit their artistic needs. This year’s faculty are: Joe Cunningham, Rosalie Dace, Valerie Goodwin, Ann Johnston, Mickey Lawler, Katie Pasquini Masopust, Jeannette DeNicolis Meyer, Philippa Naylor, Sue Nickels, Jane Sassaman, David Taylor, and Sherri Lynn Wood.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Fellows are required to give a brief lecture about their work during QBL, and are invited to be a featured artist at the Quilt Show. Proposals for other community projects or artistic endeavors during the fellowship are welcome and encouraged.

ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS
Quilting by the Lake is held at Onondaga Community College. All QBL participants including the fellows are housed in the dorms. Fellows are assigned an air conditioned private room within a shared suite. Suite features include a full kitchen including a stove and refrigerator, living room, shared restrooms, and are all fully furnished.

  • Linens are provided including 1 set of sheets, 1 blanket, 1 pillow, 1 bath towel and 1 washcloth.
  • A full-sized stove & refrigerator are provided.
  • All dorms are air conditioned.
  • Small appliances such as microwaves & coffee makers are not provided.
  • All rooms have overhead lighting only. No table or floor lamps are provided.
  • Fee laundry facilities are available.
  • Access to the YMAC on campus is also provided free of charge.
  • Cleaning service is not provided.
  • All rooms are accessible and have elevator access.
  • Dorms are a short walk from the cafeteria and most classrooms.

Lunch and Dinner are served in the college cafeteria. Various meal selections are available. Any dietary restrictions should be communicated to the cafeteria staff directly.

Fellows are responsible for all travel to and from Quilting by the Lake.

APPLICATION – No Fees
Applicants are required to submit a completed application form with references, 10 images of artwork with a corresponding image list, artist statement, resume, and a statement of intent that addresses:

  1. What classes you intend to take
  2. How you would benefit from this fellowship
  3. Your artist practices and research interests

The Schweinfurth Art Center is a non-profit gallery and multi-arts facility located in Auburn, New York, situated in the heart of the Finger Lakes. The Art Center offers five exhibitions each year featuring regional, national and international artists. Well known annual exhibits include Quilts=Art=Quilts, Made in New York and Both Ends of the Rainbow.

The Art Center offers a wide array of art classes and workshops for children, teens and adults. Leading quilting and fiber arts instructors from around the world teach during Schweinfurth’s Quilting by the Lake conference every July and during Studio Schweinfurth surface design and quilting workshops throughout the year. Other programs include folk arts, poetry, music, dance and a variety of special events.
