Art Calls CUE’s Open Call for Artists & Curators

CUE New York, NY, United States

Opportunity Description

U.S. National Deadline: June 30, 2023 – CUE’s Open Calls provide artists and emerging curators the opportunity and necessary resources to realize an exhibition at CUE’s storefront gallery in East Chelsea, New York.

Each year, a panel of established artists and curators select three solo exhibitions and one curatorial project to be realized at CUE. Finalists are paired with a member of the selection panel, who works with them as a mentor throughout the process of planning and mounting the exhibition. CUE provides institutional guidance, generous honoraria, a shipping budget, and an accompanying exhibition catalogue with a critical essay by a participant in CUE’s Art Critic Mentoring Program.

CUE aims to present new and exceptionally strong work by under-recognized and emerging artists based in the United States, and is committed to exhibiting contemporary work of all disciplines.

The exhibition selection process consists of a nomination and open call hybrid, with three types of opportunities for artists and emerging curators. This includes a series of Nominated Solo Exhibitions, a Solo Exhibition Open Call, and a Curatorial Project Open Call. In line with CUE’s commitment to providing substantive professional development opportunities, exhibiting artists and curators receive mentorship support throughout the process of planning, promoting, and curating the exhibition.

The Solo Exhibition Open Call provides emerging and under-recognized artists the opportunity and financial support to present an exhibition at CUE in 2024. The selected artists will receive valuable mentorship from an established artist or curator on the selection panel, including a studio visit and installation guidance. Exhibiting artists each receive a $5,000 honorarium and an accompanying exhibition catalogue with an essay written by a participant in CUE’s Art Critic Mentoring Program.

CUE’s Solo Exhibition Open Call is for artists who:

  • Practice any artistic discipline that can make use of exhibition space for a solo show
  • Have not had a solo exhibition in New York City within the last five years (small non-profit and artist run spaces are fine)
  • Do not have current, consistent commercial gallery representation in the United States
  • Are not currently enrolled in a degree program (with the exception of students who will have graduated by 2024)
  • Have maintained a consistent studio practice outside of an academic setting for three or more years
  • Currently live and work in the United States

CUE provides institutional guidance and resources to the curator, who produces a group exhibition with related public programming and an accompanying exhibition catalogue.

The selected curator will receive valuable mentorship from an established artist or curator on the selection panel, including preparation for the exhibition and installation guidance. In addition, the curator will be awarded a $2,500 honorarium; A budget for artist fees for participating artists; a modest budget for art shipping and art handling to transport and install the work; A catalogue that accompanies the exhibition and that includes an essay developed through CUE’s Art Critic Mentorship Program.
