Opportunity Description

U.S. Regional Deadline: May 15, 2023 – The Niaulani Sculpture Garden located at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani campus in Volcano Village, the gateway community to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which hosts more than one million visitors annually from all over the world. The sculpture garden is uniquely situated adjacent to an old growth native rainforest and features loop trail, designed by landscape architect David Tamura, which provides inviting areas for viewing the sculptures.

Artists are invited to submit proposals in the form of a drawing with descriptive notes or photos of 3 views of a 3-D maquette for stand alone sculptures or conceptual installations that express the Worth of Water in all its forms; including its sound, shape, interaction with other environmental elements or creatures, impacts, and/or the cultural value of water.

ELIGIBILITY
Professional artists, amateur artists, and university students in an art program are invited to submit original works.

SUBMISSION
Artists may submit proposals for up to three (3) original works: submission must include an artist’s narrative that may be edited by Volcano Art Center (VAC) for promotion and educational purposes.

ENTRY FEE
$10 per proposal (for up to 3 works). VAC is a 501-(c)3 non-profit, membership organization, thus artists whose proposals are accepted will be required to pay a $50 artist’s membership fee.

SELECTION PROCESS
Digital review of proposal submissions for the exhibit “Worth of Water” will be via a selection committee co-chaired by mixed-media sculptors Elizabeth Miller and Jonathan Sudler. The committee will render its decisions based upon

  1. Strength of conceptual connection with the Worth of Water
  2. Aesthetic quality of the form
  3. Determination of durability

VAC reserves the right to omit from the exhibit any sculpture that differs significantly from the digital image reviewed and approved by the selection committee.

  • November 20 Installation deadline
  • November 26 Opening and artist reception
