Artist Comments:

“I think it is far and few jurors who pick work outside of their strengths in their own medium.” – Kim

“Strong Design and Strong Composition seem slightly similar to me. I think the Three C’s are most important… Concept, Context & Content.” – Emelie K.

“Quality slides can make artwork look more refined than it actually is, thus creating a spotty exhibition. I don’t blame the juror because it is difficult to assess unseen artwork through slides. I am surprised that more competitions don’t exercise their right of refusal when seeing the originals.” – Peter H

“Composition gives the life to a painting. To be intrigued, challanged and inspired are all elements in a good composition. A strong composition freezes you, and you will remember the piece. Especially after viewing 500 pieces in a day.” – JR

“If the slide quality isn’t great even Van Gough wouldn’t get a second glance.” – Richard W.

“Integrity and commitment to a vision as well as consistency are the strengths most valued. At least, should be!” – Paul Z.

“They look at the superficial first to see if it fits their narrow scope or not.” – James D.

“I have noticed that there are some jurors who favor work similar to their own. Slide quality is first seen and can discount an otherwise good work. Often when I visit a show I am mystified by the lack of quality in some of the works chosen. I think there are jurors who rush through the process.” – Anonymous

“Picked quality of slides as #1, but do believe each choice is considered throughout the judging, but if slides are not good pictures will never get chance to be judged on any level.” – Leni

“The first impression in that slide screen which lasts 20 seconds or so is the most important. If the composition is strong, all other elements will speak out with it. All the other catagories are significant, and cannot be dismissed in any way.” – anonymous
