Opportunity Description

U.S. National Deadline: September 30, 2022 – Young Painters, U.S. residents, ages 25 – 35 as of competition entry are invited to participate in an annual juried competition for the 2022 $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award. Entrants should have achieved a significant degree of success as an emerging artist of noteworthy talent.

The Yeck Award winning artwork becomes part of the Miami University Painters of the 21st Century Collection.

ELIGIBILITY
Open to young Sculptors, U.S. residents, ages 25 – 35. All works submitted must be available for the exhibition and purchase award. Artwork should be completed within the past three years that demonstrate the scope and depth of your work.

MEDIA
Submission of Paintings: up to 5 entries; no dimension exceeding 72 inches, artwork completed within the past three years demonstrating the scope and depth of your work. All works submitted must be available for the exhibition and purchase award.

JUROR
Living in New York City, John Yau is both a distinguished poet and a renowned art and literary critic. He has published more than fifty books of poetry, artist books, fiction and criticism. Recent publications include: Genghis Chan On Drums (2021) and a monograph on the Chinese Artist, Liu Xiaodong (2021). Yau was the Arts Editor for the Brooklyn Rail (2007-2011) and he has received numerous awards, including the Jackson Prize for Poetry (2018), a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation grant and a New York Foundation for the Arts award in Poetry and Fiction. Receiving his M.F.A. from Brooklyn College and the B.A. from Bard College, Yau is currently a Professor of Critical Studies at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University and writes regularly for the online magazine, Hyperallergic.

About:
Started in 1999, the Young Painters Competition features artists aged 25 – 35, who demonstrate excellence. The juror, chosen from nationally recognized painters, museum directors, curators and art professionals, selects 10 finalists. Each year’s winner is awarded the $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award and the painting becomes a part of the permanent collection at Miami University. Alternating between representational/realism and non-representational painting, this competition assures a prominent national role for Miami University, rewarding and inspiring the creativity of talented young artists.
