Job Description

International Deadline: November 10, 2024 – The 40th Annual International Exhibition is a juried visual art competition organized by the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Tyler. Internationally known artists, curators, and scholars have served as jurors selecting works for exhibition created by some of the best contemporary artists working today.

The Department purchases three to six works from the exhibition each year; purchased works are added to our permanent collection. The permanent collection serves as an educational teaching resource; much of the permanent collection is exhibited throughout the UT Tyler main campus.

On display January 21 – March 7, 2025.

ELIGIBILITY
This competition is open to any artist who is over the age of 18, working in two-dimensional media. Paintings, drawings, prints, fiber arts, and photographs created in the last three years are welcome.

Works must be professionally presented and ready for installation upon receipt. Framed works must use Plexiglass only. Pieces with glass will not be accepted. Entries must weigh less than 50 pounds.

JUROR
Alexis Rockman, a painter based in Warren, Connecticut, is an environmental activist who began making paintings and works on paper to build environmental awareness in the mid-1980s, embarking on expeditions to distant locations like Antarctica and Madagascar in the company of professional naturalists. His work tells stories of natural histories confronting the dystopian future of the biodiversity crisis, global warming, and genetic engineering.

Rockman’s work has been exhibited around the world and showcased at prestigious galleries and museums including the Venice Biennale, Carnegie Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Serpentine Galleries, and many more. Rockman also worked on the 2012 movie Life of Pi with Ang Lee, as “Inspirational Artist” Alexis Rockman: Oceanus, a major exhibition premiered at Mystic Seaport Museum and Mark Dion and Alexis Rockman: Journey to Nature’s Underworld, opens at the Tang Teaching Museum in July 13th, 2024, the first two-person exhibition of these closely allied artists. The show will tour to four additional museums

AWARDS
Several purchase awards will be made; purchased works will be added to the University of Texas at Tyler Department of Art and Art History’s permanent collection.

FEES
This exhibition will be juried from digital media. Artists may submit up to three works for consideration for the non-refundable fee of $35.
