Art Calls Objectivity

Gallery 263 Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States

Opportunity Description

Regional Multi-State Deadline: August 20, 2021 – Gallery 263 invites artists based in New England or those who have lived in New England within the past five years to submit artwork that engages and subverts the still life genre, breathing new life into an old (time-tested) tradition. All visual and performance media (2D, 3D, time-based) will be considered.

The genre of still life continues to unfold and be expanded upon by contemporary artists. Arrangements of objects can reference the past and point to the future. Objects as subjects can provide clues to a narrative, bring attention to the overlooked and mundane of daily life, and question the subject positions of the artist and viewer.

Exhibition Dates: November 4–December 4, 2021.

First Round Review:
The first-round selection process will be completed by the Gallery 263 staff, who will select artworks based purely on their fulfillment of the below criteria and the quality of the work submitted, without regard to the exhibit space, theme, applicant preferences, personal attributions of the applicant, or logistical considerations.

Required artist statement that describes the submitted artworks as well as how they relate to your artistic practice. [maximum length 500 words]
Submitted work demonstrates an awareness of the possibilities of the a still life genre.
Evidence of craftsmanship. This consideration disregards taste or aesthetic sensibility in favor of the work’s evidence of expertise and quality within the submitted medium.
The work is contemporary; applying the lessons of the still life tradition to contemporary concerns.

Second Round Review:
Josephine Halvorson will jury the work already selected in the first review process, making selections based upon the quality, creativity, and clarity of the artwork, as well as the strength of the artist statement, particularly as the work relates to the criteria for the exhibition. There is no predetermined number of artworks for consideration.

Artists will be contacted as to whether their work was accepted or not after the second round of reviews.
